5th Grade Visits the House of Blues

Ms. Irvin-Kent brought the 5th grade on a field trip to the Blues SchoolHouse at the House of Blues in Boston on May 30. As we learned from the narrators of the musical journey, MANY kinds of music are grown out of THE BLUES! We followed the basic timeline of music as it developed into and from the blues: call & response and hollers, work songs and spirituals, early blues, 12-bar blues, and country blues, urban blues, rhythm & blues (R&B), boogie woogie and gospel, and soul, funk and rap. We heard musical examples of each. Some of our favorites included Mary J. Blige’s “Just Fine,” Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” and spiritual “This Little Light of Mine,” during which our own Farah sang a solo!

Thanks to the Big Yellow School Bus grant for our transportation and Friends of Haggerty for the tickets!
