Rising star children’s book author Ms. Oge Mora met with Haggerty students on Friday, December 7. Her Senior project for Rhode Island School of Design’s Illustrator’s major produced
Thank You, Omu and placed her on the NYT Notable books of 2018, as well as many other great book lists of 2018.
Her visit was a perfect opportunity for a collaboration between the library (Sarah Novogrodsky), art (Laurie Gaines), and the district’s personal narrative writing curriculum. Ms. Mora described her inspirations (
Aminah Robinson,
Tomie dePaola, and
Faith Ringgold) and even shared her own first grade personal narrative. By the end of the visit, students understood the amount of work that goes into making a book. Ms. Mora explained to the students that she believes picture books bring people together just as the Nigerian stew made by her Omu did. We can’t wait to see her next book,
Saturday, which will be published in Fall of 2019.
We moved from the library to the art room for collage sessions and advice from Oge. Can’t wait to share our collage with the Haggerty community. In the meantime - her are some photos of our day with Oge Mora and the students’ collage to accompany their personal narrative writing.
