Fourth/Fifth graders host author of Extraordinary Birds.
California fifth grade teacher, Sandy Stark-McGinnis, visited with students to discuss her debut novel, which is receiving accolades from many corners of the children’s literature world. “This is the story of 11-year-old December’s reluctant and courageous struggle from heartbreaking disappointment to trust. McGinnis writes a sensitive story about family, trust, bullying, mental health, and identity in a way that middle-grade kids can empathize with.” Kids Indie Next List, Spring 2019 Look for the book at your favorite library branch or independent bookstore.
Once again, the second graders are finishing the school year with a dive into the world of birds. In addition to enjoying great narrative nonfiction read alouds, students are all researching a specific bird. Fresh Pond’s Ranger Tim generously visited with us and taught us about the five owls that live around Fresh Pond. He also encouraged the students to stop by and say, “Hi,” this summer.
It has been my pleasure to be your child’s school librarian this year. Even though the school library is closed for the summer, you can stock up on books at the Cambridge Public Library for FREE. If you don’t have a library card, or have lost one, just let the library know and they will put a new one in your hands.
In addition to the local branches of the CPL, Haggerty students can access audiobooks/ebooks on our school website. From the Haggerty homepage, select the library/technology link or book icon. The “Search the Catalog” link will bring you and your child to a variety of audio and ebook options, as well as databases for any summer research needs.
SORA app works for upcoming third graders - fifth grade, students who have a school district Google account. This is available through our state library resources. Your child should be familiar with the wide range of audiobooks and ebooks. This is a great way for 4th -5th graders to get started on listening to or reading online the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award titles.
Tumblebooks needs the username: cambridgeps and password: reads. Students can then follow along to animated read alouds, fiction and nonfiction.
