Haggerty Celebrations Reminder

Haggerty Celebrations Reminder

Are you considering a party for your child? A birthday maybe? If you are distributing invitations to classmates in your child’s classroom for a personal event (ex. child’s birthday), please make sure you include every student in the class. If you are unable to include everyone, please distribute invitations via other avenues (email or US Mail) than the classroom. Did you know, there are many students who’ve never been invited to another student’s house? A play date? Or birthday party? We are always considering how to make events accessible to everyone.

In an effort to create a healthy school environment for all students, some guidelines have been developed to help guide teachers and families in the consumption of SWEETS during the school day. At Haggerty, we don’t use sweets to celebrate birthdays or holidays. Instead of food, a list of developmentally appropriate alternative activities will be distributed from your classroom teacher with the support of room parents. Please ask the classroom teacher or a room parent if you are looking for alternative ways to share with your child’s classroom.

You are encouraged to continue celebrating birthday’s in other ways. Some time tested ideas are:

  1. Individual or group cards
  2. Gift of words to read aloud
  3. T-shirts decorated by having each student sign it with a fabric marker
  4. Having a special guest come in and read a book to the class in honor of the student (family members, grand parents, former teachers, older siblings, the sky’s the limit!)
  5. What you’d spend on a cake or cupcakes from a store could be used to donate a game that students would love to have in their classroom - for ideas, ask the school counselor - Ms. Jessica, the classroom teacher, or Lissa.
