“Developing healthy, physically active and empowered individuals”
Mission Statement
The mission of the Cambridge Public School’s Health and Physical Education Department is to provide meaningful, relevant learning opportunities to support all students in developing the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to be healthy, physically active and engaged in their own health and wellbeing. During Health, Physical Education and Wellness class, students will develop competence in a variety of motor skills, will increase self-efficacy regarding their abilities to be physically active and control their health and develop health-enhancing attitudes. Upon completion of our program, students will be empowered to take control of their health and will be engaged in lifelong efforts to maintain and enhance their health.

What do students do during Physical Education?
- Please reiterate to you child that our class is not a second recess. Our class is often fun but learning is the goal, not entertainment.
- Our learning focuses on the development of physical skills and movement concepts, teamwork, and how to keep our bodies healthy.
- Aspects of sports are used to teach skills and concepts but sports are not the central focus.
- We play safe, we play fair, we play hard, and we help others.
How are students assessed?
- At no time will a student’s grade suffer for lack of physical skill, strength, or ability. Physical skills are observed and rated in comparison to a skill rubric. Students are assessed through their quality of practice and improvement upon such skills at a personal level, not competitively with other students.
- Concept understanding is assessed through verbal and written questions or through observation of such concepts in action.
- Interpersonal student behavior is assessed subjectively by observation.
