Dear Haggerty Families,

Happy Summer!

Thank you for another great year. I know you join me in thanking the Haggerty faculty for their ongoing efforts and tireless work. I have enormous gratitude for the staff at the Haggerty School. Without the collective efforts of the entire faculty and the foundation that’s been built here over the years, it would be difficult to create the many experiences your children have had. The staff here have a belief system that your children can work hard and get smarter, even in the face of challenges. It’s a fierce commitment that ALL students can and will get smarter. Collectively, this staff makes it happen; from the custodians to the specialists, the paraprofessionals, teachers and coaches, they show up and they do it because they believe deeply in in their work. I simply can not imagine being anywhere else than with this group of educators; sharing in their commitment and compassion is an incredible honor. As one 5th grader recently wrote in her response to the question, “what’s the single most important thing you’ve learned at Haggerty?” she wrote: “The most important thing I learned at Haggerty is to take more risks and be more confident. I have really learned to allow myself to be me. I think the Haggerty staff have put a lot of effort into helping us in so many ways, and I have learned from them to just be me.” Kudos to the staff for all of their work and commitment to the relationships they’ve created with every student and family over the course of the year.

Big thanks are also in order for our incredible Haggerty parents, caregivers and families. Having the trust of a parent to educate and help form a child’s beliefs and opinions of the world and community we live in  - who they become and what they believe- is another great honor. I know I speak for the entire faculty when I say, THANK YOU! Thank you for the trust you’ve had in the Haggerty Faculty. Thank you for trusting us and for sharing your incredible children with us. Thank you for your hours and hours of volunteering, room parenting, coordinating events, shelving library books, and the countless other things our parent volunteers do!

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” -- Margaret Mead

Enjoy your children and the change of pace the summer offers you and your family. Read often! Read together, share stories, and encourage your child to explore the world around them. The more they do, with your guidance and conversation, the more their vocabulary GROWS. The stronger their vocabulary, the better readers, thinkers and writers they become!

Remember that the Cambridge Public Libraries are a fabulous place to enjoy time with your children this summer. Each student should spend at least 20 minutes a day reading! The final student report card will be sent home on the last day of school and in it will be a color brochure with some summer learning challenges! Please check it out!

Best wishes for a relaxing, safe and enjoyable summer! And thanks again for a terrific year!
