Haggerty Day Success

On Thursday, June 12th, we celebrated our annual Haggerty Day Block Party! Classrooms by grade came outside and enjoyed a variety of activity stations - including African Drumming, a bounce house (obstacle course), face painting, a fire truck (grades CPP - 2nd), field games, bike safety (grades 3-5), water play (grades 3-5), and jump roping (grades 3-5). Thanks to all the caregivers who were able to come spend some time with classrooms, or run a station for us! Thanks also to Friends of Haggerty for funding all the fun - including every students Haggerty School t-shirt!!

Spring Concert

On Friday, June 13th the Haggerty community joined together to listen to the beautiful voices of our students. Each grade performed, Preschool through 4th grade, as well as the Haggerty Chorus. The songs were varied and many had different parts! The students were amazing and their efforts across the year in Music were on full display. Thank you to our music teachers, Mx. Irvin and Ms. Petrov!

Staff Appreciation Lunch

On Wednesday, June 11th, the staff were shown a beautiful gesture of appreciation from the caregivers of our community! Staff enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and desserts from our families, as well as wonderful decorations and cards of appreciation. All of the staff were so appreciative of the efforts and delicious treats! Thanks to everyone for being so thoughtful and kind! Thanks also to Friends of Haggerty for supporting this appreciation with small plants for the whole staff!

Kindergarten Art Show

On Wednesday, June 18th - our Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms held their annual art show - and it was such an impressive display of art! Students learned about many of the great artists of the world, and created pieces of art that emulated their style.

5th Grade Moving-On Assemblies

On Friday, June 20th, our fifth graders hosted their final Haggerty Show assembly! Throughout the school year, they have led monthly all-school assemblies, and on Friday, they produced their big send-off production.

Groups of students presented on themes related to our school motto: “Everyone is Different, Everyone Belongs.” To close out their time at Haggerty, the fifth graders chose to sing “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. They also placed items into a time capsule, which they’ll open in seven years when they turn 18 and graduate from high school.

After the assembly, a fun reception was held at the Russell Youth Center for all 5th grade families and staff, hosted by caregivers. There was food, music, a photo booth — and even a "Guess the Baby" slideshow game! Students received 5th grade t-shirts, beautiful yearbooks, and cookies with their faces on them.

They also had the chance to thank Kathleen Fitzgerald for the Big Backyard curriculum she shared with them this year.

A huge thank you to all the 5th grade staff for an incredible year!

From the Math Coach

We at Haggerty are so proud of all your children have learned this year! We know many students’ math skills slip a bit over the summer. Here are some fun ways to keep your child doing math!

Summer Math Calendars

Entering Grades 1-6
ST Math: puzzles that practice grade level mathematics

Entering Grades 4-6
iReady: lessons matched to your child’s performance on the iReady assessment

Entering Grades 1-6
Students may have games on their Imagine Learning (IL) app on Classlink Launchpad. (Or they may be able to teach you the pencil and paper version.)

Play games like checkers, chess, backgammon, dominoes or card games. Many games use strategic thinking or help children understand how numbers work. Count! How many chairs are in our house? How many spoons in the drawer? How many trees in the park?
Make up story problems with your child about things in your everyday life. Estimate! How many leaves on the tree? How many cars pass our house every day? How many guinea pigs fit on a plane?
Review math your child has learned this year by looking at the workbooks your child has brought home. Read math-y books with your child. Mathical awards prizes for mathy children’s books for all ages. Or ask your local librarian for some suggestions!!

From the Literacy Coach, Suzanne Russell

To all of our Haggerty students and families: We hope that you will make a commitment to read and write during the summer. All Haggerty students in grades CPP-Grade 5 will bring 3-4 books home for summer reading. Students had an opportunity to select books during library or class time this week. A STAR chart is available to track summer reading. We ask that you remind your child to read as often as possible.

There are many digital resources available for children of all ages. We have included all of the district resources here for you. Please be sure to check out the links below and check the ELA website for Caregiver resources and summer reading ideas.

Art Corner By Anthony Reynolds (Art Teacher)

Summer is upon us! We’ve been doing lots of cleaning as well as squeezing a few final projects in. In preschool, students have been using model magic to learn the beginnings of color theory, mixing rainbows from just the primary colors. Kindergarten and first grade studied the work of Frank Rizzie, and created cityscapes that come to life with personality. Most classes in the school made mini summer sketchbooks, with younger classes creating covers by making shaving cream and watercolor marble prints. I’ve encouraged students to fill their sketchbooks over the summer and bring them in to share. Students also helped create props for the spring concert.

Third through fifth also continued our life-drawing unit, arranging and drawing a still life set up in the center of the classroom. We practiced how to lay out a drawing, using general to specific shapes, blocking areas out, and controlling pressure so erasing is less necessary to make adjustments.

Students will be bringing home portfolios of work from throughout the year. This is not the only work they’ve done, some projects have been collaborative, performative, or experiential. I encourage you to explore their portfolios with them, and ask as many specific questions as you can! If you want something fun to do over the summer, an art show for your student is a fun idea. You can hang work, invite friends and family, serve light refreshments, and even price some work to sell! Invest the proceeds into art supplies!
