Family Folk Dance

On Tuesday, November 19th the Haggerty Community gathered to share in the experience of community folk dancing! Families learned about five folk dances to songs from various countries: Bulgaria, Norway, Israel, South Africa, and right here in New England. Some dances were with partners and some were in a big circle. Students from each grade brought their families, so we danced with grandparents, parents, and toddlers! Susie Petrov, our 3rd and 4th grade music teacher, played the accordion and she was accompanied by Stephen Thomforde on the bagpipes. Marcie Van Cleave was the “caller,” meaning she called out and taught the steps to all the dances. We had a wonderful turnout of families and we are so grateful! Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for supporting this fun community event!

Art Corner

Third through 5th grades continued on their yarn painting projects. Here are a few finished one from Haggerty students.

Younger classes are continuing their abstract cardboard sculptures, where we are emphasizing the art principle of texture. Here is an example by a Kindergarten student.

Coach’s Corner

Thank you to the caregivers who came to our Math Information session on Wednesday morning. It was great to meet you and do math with you! For those who weren’t able to attend, here are the slides I used.

To learn more about our math curriculum and what your children are learning, you can always go to this website to find videos and letters about each unit. (From that link, scroll down to choose your child’s grade and then click on the current unit.) Right now these are the units each grade is working on:

  • Kindergarten: Unit 2 - Numbers 1-10 (After Thanksgiving they will start Unit 3: Flat Shapes all Around Us)
  • First Grade: Unit 3 - Adding and Subtracting Within 20
  • Second Grade: Unit 3 - Measuring Length

Library Corner

As November brings a shift in colors and a refreshing chill to the air, it's a wonderful time to connect with our communities and celebrate the rich tapestry of stories that define our society. This month, we recognize Native American Heritage Month. My Heart Fills with Happiness and We Are Kind by Monique Gray Smith are two remarkable works. This talented author crafts narratives that remind us that, despite the challenges we face, happiness can still be found. Her books inspire us to pause, practice kindness toward ourselves and others, and cherish the many reasons we have to feel grateful and joyful.

Both books are available at the Haggerty Library and the Cambridge Public Library. Additionally, students can access them for free on SORA by logging in with their school email and password. In celebrating Native American Heritage Month, let us embrace the wisdom and warmth found in Monique Gray Smith's stories, as they encourage us to cultivate kindness, gratitude, and joy within our communities.

Music Corner

Our November Musician of the Month is James Brown!

James Brown was born in South Carolina in 1933. Most of his childhood music experience came from learning gospel music in the church. He learned how to play instruments from his neighbors and by ear, including piano, drums, and guitar. He’s known as the Godfather of Soul and the Hardest Working Man in Show Business because of his busy touring schedule and athletic performance on stage. He’s been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, received a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement, and a Kennedy Center honoree.

Lego Robotics Unit for Grades Four and Five

In grades four and five, we are thrilled to kick off our Lego Robotics Unit, which will last for the next four weeks. This interactive and hands-on experience will allow students to delve into the realms of robotics and coding while collaborating with their classmates. They will have the chance to work together, create a prototype, apply the engineering process to tackle a problem, code the prototype, enhance and refine their code, and share their work with others. We eagerly anticipate the creativity and enthusiasm that students will bring to this unit as they uncover the thrilling possibilities of robotics and coding!
