Coach's Corner

Welcome back to Math!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful beginning to the year. The first math unit of every grade is designed to build community and introduce students to important math concepts. Kindergarten students start the year exploring with cubes and pattern blocks. Six years later, in 5th grade, they will use those same cubes to learn about volume.

Want to watch a short video to learn more about the math your child is learning? These videos are full of information about how K-5 students are starting off the year.

Videos for Unit 1

If you want to know more, the publisher of our K-5 curriculum has a new Family Support Hub with lots of information about our curriculum. Check it out!

Library Corner

Hello Haggerty Families,

My name is Brianna Mency, and I am the librarian at your child's school. During our time together, we read, discuss stories, learn library skills, and choose books to take home. It's important for students to be responsible for returning borrowed books. Please inquire about the books your student is borrowing and designate a special spot at home for Haggerty library books. Please encourage your child to share their favorite stories and new learnings with you. Your involvement plays a crucial role in their development as enthusiastic and confident readers. If you have any questions or need further information, do not hesitate to reach out. Together, we can ensure that your child's experience in the library is both enjoyable and enriching.

  • For CPP-Kindergarten, library books remain in the classroom.
  • In Grades 1-2, students can borrow a maximum of 2 books.
  • For Grades 3-5, students are allowed to borrow up to 3 books

Mx. Irvin also teaches 3rd-5th grade chorus 7:30-8AM on Wednesday and Friday mornings to interested students. If you haven’t received a permission slip for your child yet, please reach out at [email protected]

Ms. Susie teaches Longsword club 7:30-8AM on Tuesday mornings to interested 5th graders. The first meeting will be Sept 24 in the gym. If you haven’t received a permission slip yet, please write to [email protected]

Grade 4 music classes will be gearing up to play recorders! Each child will receive an instrument from the District. Grade 3 will be playing games together and reviewing the elements of the 5-line staff.

Musician of the Month begins again! Each month we will study a new musician. Our first one is…

Roberta Flack

Born in 1937 in North Carolina, Flack is a retired American singer, known for singing soul, jazz, and R&B.

Flack grew up in a large, musical family, hearing her mother play organ at church. She learned to play piano at an early age and received a full scholarship (free!) to Howard University at age 15.

Flack is known for her collaboration with the late Donny Hathaway, as well as Peabo Bryson.

Flack is the first musician to receive 2 Grammy awards for Record of the Year in 2 consecutive years: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (1973) and Killin’ Me Softly with His Song (1974).

Cambridge School Volunteers

The 2024-2025 School Year has Begun

A warm welcome back to all the Cambridge Public School students this week. Student and teacher requests for support for various programs are already rolling in. CSV is busy recruiting volunteers to meet this demand but we still need your help! If you haven't had the chance to submit the volunteer application, it's not too late! Thank you to all that have already done so over the summer. We look forward to welcoming all new and returning volunteers this school year.

Resources

Food, Nutrition & Gardening

  • September is the month of tomatoes in Massachusetts farming, as well as corn, cranberries, and collard greens!
    • Norah’s Nutrition Nook:
      • Tomatoes as we’ve discussed before are packed with potassium to help support our muscles and blood pressure. Tomatoes are also rich in vitamin C, which is a powerhouse vitamin for our bodies! Not only does it help with healing and supporting our immune system, vitamin C plays a big role in the growth and repair of different tissues in our body, including bone and collagen.
      • Corn sometimes gets a bad rap because of its association with high fructose corn syrup, but it’s good to remind ourselves that corn is another nutrient-packed vegetable! One nutrient corn is rich in is magnesium, which plays a role in energy production as well as supporting better GI health and sleep. Unlike most vegetables, corn is technically a vegetable, but it can also double as a whole grain!
      • Cranberries, like many deep red/purple fruits and vegetables, are rich in a compound called anthocyanins! These phytonutrients play a number of roles in the body, including reducing cognitive decline overtime, reducing risk of cancer, and reducing overall inflammation.
      • Collard greens are a dark leafy green vegetable commonly used in southern cuisine! This vegetable is packed with vitamin K, which is a major nutrient that supports blood clotting, which is an immune response to protect our bodies from bleeding too much.
  • September is National Hunger Action Month. Seeing Feeding America’s calendar for ways to participate here.
  • The Cambridge Public Health Department is hosting a panel called Building the Foundation for Youth Wellbeing on September 30 from 6:30-8PM. Note there will be food and childcare provided to those who attend.
Mind, Movement & More
  • Registration for Fall Youth Basketball Leagues is now open! Registration is open for children 8 years old to grade 12. Note there is a $30 fee with registering. Please see here for more information and for how to register.

Upcoming Community Events

Harvard Powwow
September 28 | 1PM | McCurdy Outdoor Track, Harvard University

Every year, Harvard University students and staff host an annual powwow on campus. Our powwow is free, open to the public. Planning for powwow is led by a committee of Native students from Harvard College and Harvard graduate schools. The singers, artists, and dancers that join us are from all over — the Harvard community, the greater Boston area, and from tribes across the U.S. and Canada.

To ensure a successful powwow each year, our students complement funding provided by the University with outside funding and in-kind donations from generous organizations, local businesses and individuals. Please contact [email protected] to inquire about in-kind donations.

Fall 2024 Duncan Dance Registration
We invite you and your school community to join our upcoming Fall Isadora Duncan Dance term! Our program is held at the Dance Complex in Central Square on Tuesdays.

Our dance program utilizes the teachings, dances, and philosophy of Isadora Duncan, involving nature themes and relational skill building with one's peers and self. We believe our program offers a beautiful compliment to the social emotional learning philosophies your school is providing your community. We are excited to share that we have openings in our weekly classes and would love to grow our community to include more members of the Cambridge community and those beyond! Registration can be filled out online here
