Last Thursday, Haggerty was lucky to have Tanya and Francie from Wee the People present a workshop on racism for parents and kids. While the workshop was presented to the children, parents were watching to see the children’s powerful insights into the origins of slavery, racism, and its persistent effects on our society. Tanya and Francie used age appropriate analogies, activities, and stories to help kids and their parents understand the effects of systemic racism and white privilege. They encouraged parents to continue the conversation by talking with their kids about race. In particular, they suggested supporting children to notice and be curious about who is represented in books, tv, and video games, by asking questions like: Who is included? Who is in charge? Whose voice is missing?
If you missed the workshop,
check out their website to see where they are holding other workshops around town. Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for funding this wonderful workshop. We hope to see them again at Haggerty!
